The Learning Atelier for Year 6 – A space for individual learning and growing together

Published on

The Year 6 Learning Atelier forms the heart of our educational concept. Four former classrooms have been joined into one large, open learning space in which the pupils of the five classes in this year group learn together. This spatial design enables flexible learning settings, a wide variety of working methods and a new quality of collaboration.

Individual learning times and targeted support

During the daily individual learning times, the children work independently on their tasks and personal learning goals. Targeted one-to-one support also takes place here: Learning coaches and Learning guides* support the pupils according to their needs, accompany learning processes and help them reach their individual goals.

Already in Year 5, all children were divided into colour teams. Each colour team consists of two groups, each accompanied by a teacher as learning coach or learning guide*. In Year 6, 10 teams with around 12 pupils each therefore work together in the Learning Atelier.

Reliable input – clear structures

Alongside the open learning times, there are fixed input lessons every week in German, Mathematics, English and French, which take place in the respective colour groups. These clearly structured lesson phases teach the basics, introduce new topics and provide guidance for independent work.

Holistic education: social skills training, sport and prevention

Regular social skills training, a varied range of sports activities and the prevention programme “Mobbing und Du” are firmly part of the weekly rhythm, in order to strengthen social skills and promote a healthy way of getting along together. This is complemented by individual learning coaching conversations, in which personal learning paths are reflected on and further developed.

Workshop lessons in the afternoon

The afternoon lessons cover all the secondary subjects and are organised as workshop lessons. Here the pupils work on projects, explore topics independently or in groups, and can bring in their strengths creatively.

Learning diary and digital support

The learning diary plays a central role in the learning process. In it, the children record their work results, formulate weekly goals, reflect on their learning path and note down results from the learning coaching conversations. It serves both personal planning and development and transparent communication with parents.

In addition, digital platforms are becoming increasingly important – both for teaching and learning and for collaboration between school and home.

Learning in the year group – no longer just in the class

The focus is no longer on the individual class, but on the whole year group. This form of organisation creates more exchange, strengthens the community and at the same time opens up a variety of spaces for individual support and assistance.

The graduation system – more freedom through responsibility

A special element is the graduation system. Using ID cards, the pupils receive various freedoms – depending on their work attitude and sense of responsibility. These include choosing their own learning place in the school building and selecting suitable learning partners. In this way, the children increasingly learn to work independently and reflectively.
