A successful debut of our new format for Year 8
Under the motto “Ran an die Werkzeuge, fertig, los!” (“Grab the tools, ready, go!”), the pupils of our school had the opportunity on Thursday, 9 July, to gain some hands-on experience in various trades during two different workshop rounds as part of a craft and health day. Practical careers in the healthcare sector also complemented our programme.
The pupils felt very well looked after by the representatives of the various companies. They were described as very helpful, patient and friendly. The young people tackled every challenge involving sandpaper, pipe cutters, wheelchairs & Co. At Binderholz, building a table lamp took more time than planned, so the pupils were given extra time to finish their project. Just as is customary in learning at our Gemeinschaftsschule.
Some of the participants were so enthusiastic about driving the excavator at Wolff & Müller that they invested even more time here. A obstacle course was voiced as a big wish for the next workshop round. Very practical ideas came up at Heizungstechnik und Sanitär Mack when the question was how to rescue a lost ring from a drain. Trusting one’s own ideas and gut feeling was also an important element here before different types of pipes were expertly bent.
The Sport- und Physioschule Waldenburg used an escape game to enable counselling simulations and to explore physical experiences and challenges. At Elektro Erkert, pupils tinkered away to practise correctly connecting extension cables.
A relaxed working atmosphere when using equipment and tools was on offer at ALUCA, where the pupils worked on aluminium cases for vehicles. At the team from Dienste für Menschen, pupils gained insights into human anatomy. They practised the correct use of a wheelchair and experienced first-hand how people with a visual impairment perceive their surroundings. Working in home economics also became tangible through the making of herb salt: “Our specialist room has never smelled so good”, said Dagmar Zwilling, Career Orientation Coordinator.
Everyone involved was delighted with this format. Dagmar Zwilling sees it as another important step within the career choice concept of the Johannes-Brenz-Gemeinschaftsschule.
