“Why do we open doors during Advent?” and “What is so special about giving gifts?”
These were the themes of this year’s Advent services at GMS. Numerous pupils gathered in the assembly hall to think, pray and sing together about these topics.
The service for grades 7-10 was prepared by Mr. Old together with his 10th grade religion group. “Open wide the door” was the theme. How many doors have I walked through today? What happens when doors slam shut in my life? The event began with these impulses. Then came the reference to Advent: doors open here, light comes into the darkness, encounters can take place. But why do we sometimes find it so difficult to open doors? What is the lubricant? The sermon suggested that we should treat each other with respect. If you are respectful and can expect respect, then doors open more easily or it is okay if a door remains closed for a moment to have a little peace and quiet. But not forever.
Giving was the focus of the service for the 5th and 6th graders. First, Mr. Gronbach did a puzzle with all the visitors about St. Nicholas, the epitome of giving. Chocolate could be won if the answer was correct. An information film about St. Nicholas of Myra then led to the topic of giving. Mr. Gronbach contrasted the aspects of giving and receiving gifts and invited us to think about them. He also focused his thoughts on what can be given as a gift. It was very nice that candles were lit for the intercessions. That really created a Christmassy atmosphere.
The school band delighted the visitors with their songs at both services. Thanks to Mr. Schneider and Mr. Krämer, who rehearsed the songs with the band.
