Three weeks in Finland – our student exchange with Erasmus+

Published on

As part of the Erasmus+ programme, we – Itziar Prieto-Lisarde, Luisa Eisermann (both Year 11) and Raul-Piere Altmann (Q12) – had the fantastic opportunity to take part in a student exchange in Lappeenranta, Finland, for three weeks.  After welcoming the three Finnish students to Schwäbisch Hall in October 2024, it was now our turn to fly to Finland on our own at the end of April 2025. During the three weeks, we all lived with host families and got to know everyday Finnish life up close.

Each of us was placed with a different family, which meant we had very different experiences. Our main language was English, both in everyday life and when communicating with our host families. We spent a lot of time with them and, whenever possible, we accompanied our exchange partners to their hobbies and also got to know their friends.

We spent most of our time at school. There we were given free lunch every day, sometimes even food that we didn’t know from Germany. On some days we even took part in German lessons and helped younger pupils learn our language.

There were many exciting activities in our free time. We were especially impressed by the Finns’ passion for ice hockey. The team Saipa was competing for the championship, and we followed many of the matches live on the big screen in the market square in Lappeenranta or even live in the stadium. We also went on lots of trips, explored the town and visited shopping centres.

The exchange was not only a great opportunity to get to know a new country and its culture, but also a valuable personal experience. We improved our English, made new friendships and experienced a completely new school routine.

Why should you take part?
If you are curious about other cultures, enjoy travelling and want to develop yourself, then Erasmus+ is just the right thing for you! You learn to be independent, discover new perspectives and broaden your horizons – not only linguistically, but also personally.

We are grateful for these wonderful experiences in Finland and can only recommend that everyone seize the chance when it comes along.
