Students celebrate Advent services in the school hall

„Why do we open doors in Advent?“ and „What is special about giving?“

These were the themes of this year’s Advent services at the GMS. Many pupils gathered in the school hall to reflect together on these themes, to pray and to sing.

The service for Years 7 to 10 was prepared by Herr Old together with his religion group of Year 10 pupils. “Make the door high” was the theme. How many doors have I already walked through today? What happens when doors slam shut in my life? These questions opened the event. Then came the link to Advent: here doors open, light enters the darkness, and encounter can take place. But why is it sometimes so hard for us to open doors? What is the lubricant? The sermon suggested treating one another with respect. If you are respectful and can expect respect, doors open more easily, or it is okay if a door stays closed for a moment so that you can have a little peace. But not for ever.

Giving was the focus of the service for Years 5 and 6. First, Herr Gronbach led all visitors in a quiz about St Nicholas, the embodiment of giving. Anyone who gave a correct answer could win chocolate. An information film about Nicholas of Myra then led into the theme of giving. Herr Gronbach contrasted giving and receiving and invited everyone to reflect on them. He also turned his thoughts to what we can give. It was very lovely that candles were lit during the prayers of intercession. This created a truly Christmassy atmosphere.

The school band delighted visitors at both services with their songs. Many thanks to Herr Schneider and Herr Krämer, who rehearsed the songs with the band.
