When Greek gods use social media…

Irritated and horrified, the Greek gods notice that people no longer seem to be bringing them offerings. “What on earth are they doing instead all day long?” they wonder, and Hermes is sent down to Earth to find out why humankind has changed its behaviour. He returns with a small, flat box. “People are busy with this day and night!” he explains to the puzzled gods. “They call it a MOBILE PHONE!” Since the gods themselves cannot operate the phone, two children are brought up to Olympus to introduce the gods to the world of mobile phones and the internet. “You need ‘followers’,” the children explain. Only in this way would the gods regain their former popularity. Soon Aphrodite is offering a beauty blog, Hercules is promoting body-building and Poseidon water sports. All the gods are swept up in the pull of the internet and forget their actual duties. Soon they also get to know the negative sides of the internet: from using up all their data allowance to cyberbullying. The wise Pallas Athena advises throwing all the mobile phones into the underworld, but it seems to be too late for that: the gods have already become too accustomed to their phones and the internet. And in the end they also need “followers”, because being worshipped is what gives their lives meaning.
